The chairman of the board of the Kazakhmys Corporation, Nurakhmet Nuriyev, stated that there are “no claims” against the participants of the strike.
Approximately 200 workers of Kazakhmys in the city of Satpayev went on strike on December 17, demanding higher wages and improved working conditions. They insisted on a 100% increase in salaries. The strike received support from workers in other divisions of Kazakhmys, including those in the Zhambyl region. The employer has entered into negotiations with the workers.
The striking workers recorded a video message to the president, claiming that they are “not considered human beings.” They complained about the harassment of members of their initiative group, who communicated the strikers' demands to the employer and authorities. The miners added that they are not disrupting public order and are only presenting economic demands.
The employer and local authorities have not commented on these claims.
Late in the evening on December 20, the KazTAG agency reported that after the negotiation process, the strike was concluded, and the miners left the mines where they had been for several days.
The largest shareholder of the Kazakhmys Corporation is Kazakhmys Copper. It is controlled by Kazakhmys Holding Limited, owned by billionaire Vladimir Kim (Forbes Kazakhstan estimates his wealth at $3.6 billion, placing him fourth among the richest people in Kazakhstan) and Eduard Oghai ($800 million and 13th place in the ranking).
In the Ulytau region, Kazakhmys is considered the largest taxpayer in the area. According to the corporation, approximately 37,000 people are employed at its three production sites (Balkhash, Zhezkazgan, and Karaganda).
