A vehicle drove into a crowd at a Christmas market located in the central square of the city on the evening of December 20. According to AFP and based on videos released by various media outlets, a black BMW sped through the crowd for approximately 400 meters towards the town hall.
The driver, a 50-year-old doctor from Saudi Arabia, was apprehended at the scene. He is suspected of intentionally running over people. According to authorities, the arrested individual had been living in Germany since 2006 and obtained refugee status in 2016. He rented the vehicle shortly before the incident, which officials have already labeled as an "attack" and "act of terrorism." An investigation is ongoing.
"My thoughts are with the victims and their families," wrote German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Today, December 21, he will visit Magdeburg. Condolences have also been expressed by the authorities of the United States, France, and the European Union.
The government of Saudi Arabia condemned the attack on people in Germany and expressed solidarity with the German people and the families of the victims.
