Astana. December 9. KAZAKHSTAN TODAY - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan is monitoring the situation in Syria, stated the official representative of the foreign policy agency, Aibek Smadiyarov.
"It is too early to talk about negotiations on Syria in Astana; we are tracking the situation," TASS quotes Smadiyarov.
Let us remind you that negotiations for the resolution in Syria, known as the Astana format or Astana process, have been ongoing since 2017. In November, the 22nd round of talks took place in Astana. The meeting, which included representatives from Russia, Iran, Turkey, as well as the Syrian Foreign Ministry and the Syrian opposition, discussed efforts to resolve the situation in Syria, the release of hostages, and the search for missing persons, as well as the humanitarian situation in the country and the mobilization of international community efforts to aid its post-conflict recovery. A meeting at the level of the foreign ministers of Russia, Iran, and Turkey also took place on December 7 at the Doha Forum in the capital of Qatar.
Previously, on November 27, members of opposition armed groups launched a large-scale offensive against government forces in the provinces of Aleppo and Idlib. By the evening of December 7, opponents of Syrian President Bashar Assad had captured several major cities - Aleppo, Hama, Deir ez-Zor, Daraa, and Homs, and on December 8, they entered Damascus, after which Syrian army units left the city. Assad left his post and the country following intra-Syrian negotiations.
